Nutlock Update
over 8 years ago – Mon, Aug 24, 2015 at 10:14:45 PM

Hi backers!

We're here reporting for duty. We spent LONG, LONG hours in a warehouse packing each of your beautiful Nutlocks by hand this past week. We wanted to give you an update on where things are at and some speedbumps we're moving past:

Some crappy news: our manufacturer made our skewers too long :(. Here's a picture:

Top: Regular front QR skewer. Middle & Bottom: Nutlock QR skewers for front & rear.
Top: Regular front QR skewer. Middle & Bottom: Nutlock QR skewers for front & rear.

This wasn't fitting on any of bikes we tested, so we moved quickly to find a machine shop to cut down and re-thread the skewers to be the correct size. This was a bit of a challenge since the skewers were heat-treated and made of a tough stainless steel, though by grinding it down they were able to do it for the 5mm QR skewers.

We're still trying to figure out what to do for the Thru axle mountain bike backers (which have much thicker skewers) and will know in the next few days.

Some uplifting news: We've packed every order in their shipping envelopes with labels printing! Solid axle orders are sealed and ready to be shipped. QR orders are packed but we are still waiting to pick up the revised skewers and put them in each package.

Here's a picture:

Everything should be shipped out by the end of this week. We will update if otherwise.

Here's a poem to end the update:

We felt like manure getting these extra long skewers,

We circumcised them to history, and now we're almost to victory.

(Almost) Squeakie Clean!
over 8 years ago – Sat, Aug 15, 2015 at 12:01:22 AM

We got our nuts. Our manufacturer didn’t clean some of them and they had leftover residue from the finishing process.

Minor, but this is not something you should have to deal with. So we spent the entire day today hand-brushing each nut, one by one, with cleaning supplies (God bless Windex).

We were able to get 80% of it out and they look pretty clean, though we wanted to give you all a heads up in case you see anything leftover on your nuts. This leftover residue is just color and doesn’t affect the performance whatsoever. We tested everything and all the units performed great.

We will begin shipping early next week. It’s Amir’s birthday tomorrow and he will be taking an extra beer (or a few ;)) on behalf of all our backers.

Poem to end our update:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roses are red, Nutlocks aren’t blue,
Dirty nuts suck, so we cleaned them for you.
Mikey & Amir
NUTLOCKS HAVE ARRIVED! Packing & Shipping beginning NOW.
over 8 years ago – Wed, Aug 12, 2015 at 10:36:25 PM
A few things to go over:
We want to apologize for the delays after delays.
We have learned a lot through this process and one thing our whole team realized we could have greatly improved is posting more frequent updates. Little delays kept popping up here and there, and that extra transparency to backers is something we should have provided.
At times we felt ashamed / embarassed that we were not meeting our time estimates. Some things were out of our hands, like our manufacturer telling us the product would be ready mid-June when in reality they took until August - though this is no excuse, and is a valuable lesson we have picked up.
A note to our backers.
Your patience and support have kept us pushing through these last few months. We remember every single positive support e-mail we get and in fact share these with our team. Anybody who has left us a positive note, your voice has been heard and whether you know it or not, you are creating an impact amongst us. So thank you :) We would've had all gray hairs by now if we had any other backers.
Now, onto the good stuff.
OUR PACKAGES ARE HERE!!!!!!
Here's a picture of our nuts:
So finally after learning all the details of international & US customs, the full shipment has arrived. We even paid an extra $1,000 to have them air shipped and hand-delivered to us so we wouldn't have any more delays.
All the goods are being packed in L.A. starting first thing tomorrow. We should have everything shipped out within the next week.
We will post another update once everything has been shipped out.
IT'S SHIPPING TIME.
Nutlock In Manufacturing
over 8 years ago – Sun, Aug 09, 2015 at 09:30:25 PM
Hi Backers!
We just finished visiting our manufacturer’s plant to oversee Nutlock’s production - here are some pictures of Nutlock throughout the manufacturing process, as requested by a few backers:
We come bearing some news that isn’t a problem but is definitely a bit frustrating. There we encountered a couple hiccups that turned into a major positive points — we learned that our manufacturer doesn’t cut any corners whatsoever. For all the molds and cavities that were produced for all the different variations, our manufacturer used a strict quality control process. This is great news for us because it creates a stronger trust between them as our partner.
However, of all the molds made there were some molds that didn’t pass the quality control test. Consequently, we had to scrap those molds and remake them. This kills us because it has thrown us 3 more weeks behind schedule. We really apologize - If we were backers of this project, we’d be pretty annoyed at this point. We’re not making excuses for tardiness, we just want to keep everyone informed and in the loop. Our frustration has been above our heads, in fact we held a specific meeting with our manufacturer to see what could be done to speed up the process moving forward.
The trip turned out to be a great way for us see how intense their quality control process was, and it’s great news moving forward. The new ETA for Nutlock shipping out is the third-fourth week of July.
To expedite shipping, our team has labeled all the packages with postage ready to go along with other elements in the package. All of the preliminary actions for shipping have been completed. Literally, when the units land, we’ll pack up everyone’s order and ship them immediately.
That’s all the updates we have for now. You’ve all really made our lives much less stressful throughout this process. We thank you for that. Please please reach out to us if you have any questions.
Sizing emails
We put together some sizing guides and spent the last week e-mailing every backer to help each of you with:
1) Helping you get sizing info for your bike if you haven’t gotten it yet Making sure you have the 2) right sizing info for your bike based on the guides we provided.
Please take a look at your e-mail. We’ve sent over 1000 emails so filters might be sending ours to the spam folder — please check there if you haven't received it yet. Also let us know if it’s in spam - we’d like to know & prevent that from happening moving forward.
If you still need to update your address / sizing, please do so by the end of the month.
Here's a link to the sizing guide: http://bit.ly/NutlockSizing
If your bike is a cruiser, please message or email us. This is because cruisers all have special sizing on their rear wheels and we need to make sure you’re all set for that. Here’s an example of what a typical cruiser looks like:
Free bonuses for backers
Safety Stickers
We decided to include free stickers for all backers. These are high quality, reflective stickers that increase safety in two ways:
1) They are reflective and will help you become more visible at night.
2) They say “This bike is protected by Nutlock”. This will hopefully deter thieves from touching your bikes and moving onto a nearby one that has no protection.
We will be including a sticker in every backers package!
Washers
Backers with solid axle sizes will be receiving special internally threaded washers to use with their bikes. These will help distribute the load of Nutlock evenly on our bikes’ dropout and reduce loosening of Nutlock over time.
Backers receiving quick release or thru axle replacement skewers do not need any washers and can use their quick release springs (optional) if they’d like.
Manufacturing Update
We are on track with manufacturing. We are receiving units at the end of May, at which point we will have to pack and ship and get these in your hands!
As of now, toolings are completed for manufacturing, and production of Kickstarter units will begin in the next few days. Units will take 3 weeks to make and 3 weeks to arrive to our door. We're getting so close and it's so exciting to see this project becoming a reality.
